Dharmic vs Abrahamic Religions

Eastern religions

The distinction between Eastern and Western religions is not the location of its followers, but the beliefs that they follow. While Eastern religions range from polytheistic to atheistic, Western religions usually revolve around one God. For instance, Christianity considers God as a savior and Islam considers Muhammad theirs. The number of deities in Eastern religions vary more than Western religions. Followers of Hinduism worship many deities and avatars while followers of Shinto worship deities, called Kami, that can be animals, objects, or nature.

Western religions refers to religions that originated within Western culture, and are thus historically, culturally, and theologically distinct from the Eastern religions.

People try these belief systems on as one might try on a new fashionable hat from a faraway land. Even so, if it is a belief system that has to do with spirituality and the supernatural which Buddhism and Hinduism surely do , it is in all likelihood, in the very definition of the word, a religion. It is only human nature to either idealize the things we do not know or, on the contrary, to fear and demonize them. That is why some Christians might not hesitate to call Buddhists or Hindus hell-bound heathens, while other Christians might say they are peaceful folk who are simply taking another path to finding God even though many Buddhists and Hindus do not even remotely believe in the Christian definition of God. Both of these viewpoints are broad overgeneralizations.

In studying world religions, there will inevitably be a difference in the types of religions that are in different areas. Typically, the world is divided into two areas when speaking of religions; those that are Eastern and those that are Western. There are few similarities between speaking of Western and Eastern religions other than there are some people who live in the western world and have Eastern religions, and there are those who live in the East and believe in Western religions. Both the Eastern and Western world religions were greatly impacted throughout history, and there were many wars fought over religious influences across the world. Eastern religions are typically described by those religions that are practiced in areas like China, India, Southeast Asia, and Japan. Eastern religions are also typically polytheistic, whereas typically Western religions are monotheistic in that only one God is worshipped. Western religions are those religions that are practiced in most other countries outside of the East.
