Calvin and Hobbes (Calvin and Hobbes #1) by Bill Watterson

Strip after strip after strip.

Some books just win you over.

I too sleep with the baseball bat beside my bed to kill the monster lurking down it.

I wonder I still may not be old enough to not start doing this poll manipulation thing with my dad either.

I do not want my wife to have such a kid in the house. I want to be that kid rather.
We might consider a tiger instead.

With characters sketched up as well as these, you will be going out of your way not to give this one a 5 star.

Wonderful and addictive.

Did I say 5 stars already? Make that 5 stars plus one more for the timelessness captured.

Why Calvin and Hobbes is Great Literature

This week sees the release of Dear Mr. Happily, the film is as much a celebration of the strip as anything else. He worked for six months at the Cincinnati Post in , right after he graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio with a degree in political science, incidentally. Some of this work is available online, and as you can see from the example above, his distinctive style was already pretty much fully formed long before Calvin and Hobbes entered the picture. According to a mutual friend , Borgman was two years ahead of Watterson, and both studied under the same drawing teacher. Behold: the cover art for a tape released by The Rels, featuring Tom Watterson on guitar and lead vocals. Calvin, meanwhile, takes his name from John Calvin, the cheerless Protestant theologian responsible for founding the strand of Christianity that now bears his name.

I have loved them for years my grandson who is 10 years old has also discovered them and I purchased them as a christmas present. Read full review. Account Options Sign in. My library Help Advanced Book Search. Get print book.

Space provides the tempo and rhythm of the strip. Newspaper comics, he wrote, provide a unique space for many readers before they start their day; we get to pass, briefly, through a door into a calmer, simpler world, where the characters often remain largely the same, even down to their clothing. Not all newspaper comics are like this, of course, particularly the more complex narrative comics of the past like Little Nemo in Slumberland or Terry and the Pirates, and the worst comics—of which there are many—retain that sense of sameness by being formulaic and uninspired. But this, too, is related to space. Space, broadly speaking, is what defines Calvin and Hobbes. The strip follows Calvin, a blonde six-year-old American that Watterson named after the founder of Calvinism.
