Unseen: The Gift of Being Hidden in a World That Loves to Be Noticed by Sara Hagerty

Every heart longs to be seen and understood. Yet most of our lives is unwitnessed. We spend our days working, driving, parenting. We sometimes spend whole seasons feeling unnoticed and unappreciated. So how do we find contentment when we feel so hidden?

In Unseen, Sara Hagerty suggests that this is exactly what God intended. He is the only One who truly knows us. He is the only One who understands the value of the unseen in our lives. When this truth seeps into our souls, we realize that only when we hide ourselves in God can we give ourselves to others in true freedom—and know the joy of a deeper relationship with the God who sees us.

Our culture applauds what we can produce, what we can show, what we can upload to social media. Only when we give all of ourselves to God—unedited, abandoned, apparently wasteful in its lack of productivity—can we live out who God created us to be. As Hagerty writes, “Maybe my seemingly unproductive, looking-up-at-Him life produces awe among the angels.”

Through an eloquent exploration of both personal and biblical story, Hagerty calls us to offer every unseen minute of our lives to God. God is in the secret places of our lives that no one else witnesses. But we’ve not been relegated to these places. We’ve been invited.

We may be “wasting” ourselves in a hidden corner today: The cubicle on the fourth floor. The hospital bedside of an elderly parent. The laundry room. But these are the places God uses to meet us with a radical love. These are the places that produce the kind of unhinged love in us that gives everything at His feet, whether or not anyone else ever proclaims our name, whether or not anyone else ever sees.

God’s invitation is not just for a season or a day. It is the question of our lives: “When no one else applauds you, when it makes no sense, when you see no results—will you waste your love on Me?”

Healing Scriptures

When You Feel Forgotten {Genesis 40}

Or maybe you have helped someone…more than once… and now you need them, and they are no where to be found. Joseph received his coat of many colors and out of jealousy, his brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt. But the Lord was with Joseph. The Lord was with Joseph , and he became a successful man , and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. Joseph declined, over and over, until one day she grabbed him by the garment and as he ran away — she was left with his garment in her hands. They answered: they had a dream but no one to interpret their dream for them. Joseph interpreted their dreams for them.

There are so many times in life when we feel totally overwhelmed, all stressed out and completely exhausted. These are the worst times… We are shattered, broken and feel totally inadequate and unappreciated. Life, it seems, is completely hopeless. It never is. For we serve the most mighty God.

This is especially true for those closest to us: a spouse, children, friends, co-workers, or a boss. However, being frustrated and angry rarely influences anyone to know the Christ who lives within us. The Lord equips His people with spiritual gifts to help us rise above the carnal nature of feeling sorry for ourselves. Before we are quick to judge the failings of those around us, we must first take a look at our own hearts. We may be tempted to harbor resentment in our hearts towards those who remain ungrateful. However, if we attempt to be like Christ, we must use this opportunity to forgive them. The biggest test for each of us in these situations is keeping our hearts pure before God.

Feeling unappreciated

Abraham Hicks — WHEN YOU FEEL UNAPPRECIATED

Feeling unappreciated by family, friends, or society is a tough place to be. Every person wants to feel important, respected, and valued in their own right. We all need recognition and a pat on the back every now and then. Your days especially as a mom are probably filled with thankless jobs of what you perceive to be a boring or insignificant life. When motherhood begins, life is not about you anymore. But you catch my drift.

Being rejected is one of the most painful and damaging things that can ever happen to anybody, men or women alike, even inside the church. It is painful at the time of offense and can continue affecting the victims even long after the rejection has occurred. As such, we must avoid rejecting anybody. Women, in particular, tend to be rejected even more when a church has a bias in favor of men. Women in such churches tend to take the backseat, are given roles limited to support or helping, and are not given as much appreciation compared to the men in the church. While some women are indeed natural helpers and supporters thanks to God's design, some women are gifted with leadership, administrative skills, and even spiritual gifts like prophecy.

Sometimes I wake up in the morning feeling a little grumpy. Time to do it all again. I'll buy food that gets eaten. I'll wash clothes that get dirty again. I'll sweep floors that will be littered with crumbs an hour later. Is there more to all this than just doing the tasks of everyday life?
