Lets Talk About Sex by Robie H. Harris

Lets talk about Lets talk about Sex. Lets talk about all the good things and the bad things!

+ This book is sex positive and does not try to scare children into not having sex.
+ This book mentions that sex has to do with love and lust and not only with reproduction.
+ It includes a chapter on homosexuality and bisexuality.
+ It includes a chapter on masturbation.
+ It teaches that no means no and that you can say no at any time, to anything and anybody. It also teaches to accept another persons no.
+ It is very body positive and features illustrations of bodies in various shapes, sizes and shades.
+ The chapters on puberty do not only focus on bodily changes, but also on changing feelings and hardships during puberty.
+ The chapters on puberty do not solely talk about sexual organs and their changes, but also about general changes in a growing body.
+ At the end, it has a list of national services that provide counseling and help with all things regarding sexual health.

o The book teaches about contraception, but focuses heavily on waiting until you feel responsible, whenever that might be.
o The book mentions same-sex relationships, but nothing about same-sex sexual activities.
o The book mentions homosexuality and bisexuality in a very mature and positive tone, but does not feature anything concerning asexuality or sexuality as a spectrum.
o This book contains the its normal to experiment with the other sex during your teenage years phrase, which I am really not a fan of.
o While it briefly touches on consent, it only contains the no means no part of it and doesnt talk about only yes means yes.

- The bird and the bee. I understand they were there to give the kids something to laugh and lighten things up. But it made me a little uncomfortable how the bee really didnt want to talk about sex, and the bird did so anyway. It kind of brings across the message that people who dont seem interested in sex or learning about it are just shy or ashamed. I think its important to teach kids about sex, but if they show that theyre not ready to learn about some things yet, its better not to force them to talk about something theyre very uncomfortable with.

Granted, this book is a few years old. For its age, it is quite well rounded. Not only does it explain the bodily functions and biological stuff very well, it also emphasizes feelings and sexuality apart from mere sex. I would recommend reading this book together with your kids, explaining what you agree with, what you dont agree with, and what more there is. Its not perfect, but it is very good..

This book really clearly explains some tricky topics and has lots of good tips for parents too who want to broach the topic of sex education with their growing children but are not sure of the way to go about it like myself. I've found that my kids aged 7 and 9 read parts of it themselves and seem to find it really interesting but it is also a good point for starting conversations between us. I especially like that lots of the tips are based on real research of, for example, what kids want to be told by their parents. Would definitely recommend to others with children of a similar age. Did you? Yes No. Honestly, I didn't even make it to read the text.
