Three moments in Takaki's life: his relationship with Akari and their forced separation; his friendship with Kanae, who is secretly in love with him; the demands and disappointments of adulthood, an unhappy life in a cold city. Well I'll be damned if this film doesn't pack as much emotion as humanly possibly into its fleeting, sixty minute runtime. If you've ever been in love with someone else but knew, for some reason or some distance, that you couldn't be with them, I urge you to watch this movie; it captures that feeling perfectly. The film is divided into three chapters, each one accentuated by the others, though I can safely say that the first…. Tenth watch of Japanese July. I can't really tell you if I liked 5 Centimeters a Second on a technical level. I'd be hard-pressed to find a more beautifully animated film, but the structure and pacing are much harder to reconcile.
Sign in. Told in three interconnected segments, we follow a young man named Takaki through his life as cruel winters, cold technology, and finally, adult obligations and responsibility converge to test the delicate petals of love. Takaki and Akari are two classmates in elementary school. During their time together they have become close friends. Their relationship is tested when Akari moves to another city because of her parents' jobs. Both of them struggle to keep their friendship alive, as time and distance slowly pulls them apart.
