This Being Human is a Guest House
The Guest House: A Poem
Last year I spent a few weekends in the beautiful national park De Sallandse Heuvelrug, in the eastern province Overijssel. Every time I saw it, I reminded myself to write it down or look it up. The next morning I went running in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam. It was a gorgeous winter day. And guess what, all of the sudden it struck me from out of nowhere. Listening to the music, running and enjoying the sunlight, I totally did not expect this. Just one of those moments….
This poem by Rumi would have to be one of the most frequently recited poems in mindfulness retreats and courses around the world. I love all of his poetry but this is definitely one of my personal favourites. It just gets to the heart of mindful living in the most eloquent and beautiful way. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all!
My yoga teacher read this poem by Rumi at the beginning of class yesterday.
